Creating a brave, but safe space for women of color to explore nature!
Due to systemic racism and exclusionary policies, Black and Brown people have not been widely present in outdoor recreation.
Our mission is to create a brave, but safe space for Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian women and femme-identifying folks of color to explore nature.
The history of outdoor recreation is complicated and often discouraging, but we see a brighter future ahead.
We believe that the first step in making change is learning from our past. Black Women Explore was the result of a lack of visibility in the outdoor recreation space in the Northeast Ohio area. But, we understand that this is bigger than just our community. It is tied to a deep history of racist practices and policies.

We believe that environmental justice and racial justice are inextricably linked. Although, we are not a formal nonprofit, we often connect with other organizations and advocacy efforts. “As you walk, look around, assess where you are, reflect on where you have been, and dream of where you are going. Every moment of the present contains the seeds of opportunity for change. Your life is an adventure. Live it fully.”
